The first five states hosting Journey Stories were recognized during a luncheon at the Federation of State Humanities Councils' 2008 National Humanities Conference in Arlington, Virginia on Saturday. In honor of being the first five states on the tour, representatives from Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, North Dakota and Oklahoma received a bag filled with gifts to help them along on their travels -- including a Viewmaster with scenes from American travel spots and historic vehicles, a compass, maps, and other assorted items. All participants in the luncheon also received a luggage tag featuring the Journey Stories logo and information on the exhibition.

Journey Stories will kick-off a six-year tour in May 2009! Look for it in Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, North Dakota and Oklahoma!

I attended the opening exhibit of Journey Stories in Clinton, Mississippi. Mississippi was one of the five states chosen for this exhibit. Clinton was selected from 18 applications for exhibit in Mississippi. The exhibt will reside at the Visiter Center on the Natchez Trace in Clinton for six weeks. The exhibit will then travel to Southhaven, Natchez, McComb, Hazleburst and Long Beach, Mississippi. The opening was the first of the five states to host as it was held at 10:00 a.m. Carol Harsh from the Smithsonian was present as were representatives from Mississippi Humanities, the mayor of Clinton and volunteers from the Visitor Center and trained docents. Fifty-two persons volunteered as docents for the six week run of the Journey Stories exhibit. It was an honor to be present and experience this exhibit. It is a magnificent story of Americans and their travels. I so hope that residents and travelers will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and excellent exhibit.
